What each mode is for

Add HST (forward)

The default. You’re billing a customer $X and need to know the total with HST. Use this to build your invoice.

Extract HST (reverse)

Your customer paid $X total. You need to pull the HST portion back out — usually because you forgot to quote tax separately, or you’re reconciling a receipt.

Quick Method

A CRA election that lets small businesses remit a flat percentage of sales instead of tracking every Input Tax Credit. Ontario rates: 8.8% for services, 4.4% for goods resellers. Only available if annual taxable supplies are under $400K.

When Quick Method pays off

Quick Method usually wins for service businesses with low expenses — consultants, freelancers, trades that don’t buy much material. If you’re reselling goods or have significant taxable purchases, the standard method with ITCs often nets more. Run both. Then file.

Ontario HST rate is 13% — unchanged since . Quick Method rates are the CRA RC4058 amounts for registrants in Ontario supplying Ontario customers. Place-of-supply rules, PSB rebates, and POS rebates (children’s clothing, books, diapers, etc.) aren’t modelled here — talk to us if any of those apply. Everything runs in your browser. We never see your numbers.
